ONE PASSAGE, MADE CLEARER

Make a paragraph easier to follow.

A paragraph simplifier rewrites connected sentences in easier language. Paste the whole passage so references, contrasts, and conditions stay together, then compare the result with your original.

Paste your paragraph and choose a simplification level.

Keep the sentences connected

The hardest part of a paragraph is often the relationship between its sentences. ‘This,’ ‘however,’ and ‘therefore’ refer to ideas around them. Simplifying one sentence in isolation can make a passage less clear if the rewrite loses those connections.

  • Reference: make it clear what ‘this,’ ‘it,’ or ‘they’ refers to.
  • Contrast: keep a difference signaled by ‘but,’ ‘although,’ or ‘however.’
  • Cause and sequence: distinguish why something happened from what happened next.
  • Conditions: keep ‘only if,’ ‘unless,’ and any exceptions attached to the action they control.

One paragraph, three simplification levels

Each pair starts with the same source passage. These hand-written examples illustrate the level choices; actual AI output will vary.

Lightly simpler

BEFORE

Following the completion of registration, participants will receive access to the online materials. However, access to the workshop recordings is contingent upon attendance at the live session. This restriction does not apply to the written exercises.

AFTER

After completing registration, participants will receive access to the online materials. However, access to the workshop recordings depends on attendance at the live session. This restriction does not apply to the written exercises.

Small wording changes keep the formal tone and the original sentence structure.

Illustrative example

Clear & simple

BEFORE

Following the completion of registration, participants will receive access to the online materials. However, access to the workshop recordings is contingent upon attendance at the live session. This restriction does not apply to the written exercises.

AFTER

After you finish registering, you can access the online materials. You must attend the live session to access the workshop recordings. You do not need to attend the session to access the written exercises.

The rewrite names the requirement directly and makes the exception explicit.

Illustrative example

Extra simple

BEFORE

Following the completion of registration, participants will receive access to the online materials. However, access to the workshop recordings is contingent upon attendance at the live session. This restriction does not apply to the written exercises.

AFTER

First, finish signing up. Then you can use the online materials. To watch the workshop recordings, you must attend the live session. You can use the written exercises even if you do not attend the session.

The sequence is split into short sentences. The live-session requirement still applies only to the recordings.

Illustrative example

Check what changed between the sentences

In the example above, ‘this restriction’ refers to attending the live session. A rewrite saying that all materials require attendance would change the original. A rewrite saying that recordings are available to everyone would also change it.

Review the whole paragraph as well as individual words. A result with shorter sentences is useful only if the same people, actions, and conditions remain connected.

How to simplify your paragraph online

  1. Paste the passage with enough context.

Include a nearby sentence if it defines a term or explains a reference. You can submit up to 1,000 words and 16,000 characters.

  2. Choose a level and language.

Select Lightly simpler, Clear & simple, or Extra simple. Keep Same language selected when you want the rewrite in the original language.

  3. Request a rewrite and compare it.

Select Dumb it down in the tool. Read the result next to your original, paying attention to references, contrasts, numbers, and exceptions.

  4. Copy the version you have checked.

Use Copy text after the rewrite finishes. If you edit your input or choose another level, generate a new version before relying on the old result.

Use it for the passage in front of you

Try a dense article paragraph, a work email, or an explanation in your study notes. Keep any definition needed to understand the passage. Simplifying existing notes does not automatically turn them into a complete study guide.

For a longer draft, use the essay simplification guide to check the argument and consistency across paragraphs.

Questions about simplifying paragraphs

Can I simplify a single sentence?

Yes. Paste the sentence on its own when it makes sense without surrounding text. Include nearby sentences when a pronoun, condition, or technical term needs that context.

Is a paragraph simplifier the same as a summarizer?

A simplifier aims to make the passage easier to understand while keeping its details. A summarizer selects the main points and may omit supporting information. This tool is designed for simplification.

Which level should I choose?

Use Lightly simpler for small edits, Clear & simple for everyday wording, or Extra simple for more basic explanations. Compare the examples above, then judge your result against the original. The levels are not certified reading grades.

Can I use the paragraph simplifier for free?

The tool provides 2 free rewrites per day, shared by people on the same network. The allowance resets at 00:00 UTC, and shared daily capacity also applies. Each request can contain up to 1,000 words and 16,000 characters.

Can it simplify text from a PDF or website?

You can copy a passage and paste it into the text box. Check for missing words, line-break errors, and table formatting before submitting. The current tool accepts pasted text; it does not import a PDF or fetch a website URL.
